Rangefinder boxes lead with max range: 1,000, 1,200, even 1,300 yards. That is the distance to a big, reflective target like a tree or a barn. A flagstick is thin, so the lock range to a pin is far shorter. Of the six listings we read, only 2 print a flag range at all, and those numbers are 13 to 30 percent of the headline.

Three things to check before you buy
- Flag range, not max range. Make sure it reaches the longest shot you aim at a flag.
- A visible slope switch. Under the Rules of Golf, measuring elevation is not allowed in a round. For competition, slope has to be off.
- Numbers that agree. Several listings print one range or rating in the title and another in the spec table.
